What is A Juicer?

A juicer is a machine that extracts juice from your fresh produce and gives you all the vital nutrients that are lost with pasteurized juices you find at your local markets.

what is a juicerWhat is a Juicer Going to Do For You?

A juicer will give you all the nutrients that your fresh produce has to offer without the loss through pasteurization like store bought juices do.

Pasteurized juices are heated to kill harmful bacterias such as e-coli and salmonella along with other disease causing germs, that can grow with time if left unpasteurized on store shelves.

When juices are heated to remove any harmful bacterias and germs they also lose some of the vitamins, minerals and other healthy nutrients that are found naturally in fruits, veggies and leafy greens.

A juicer allows you to get fresh juice loaded with all the natural vitamins, minerals and nutrients found in your produce.  Most of us take some sort of vitamin supplement daily to give our bodies what they’re lacking from our everyday diets.  Juicing can give your body what it needs naturally by simply making juices with produce that contain the vitamins and minerals you need.

Juicers separate the fiber from the natural juice found in your produce.  By doing this, when we drink our finished juice all of those vitamins and minerals are immediately put into our bodies.  When we eat our fresh produce, which is very healthy also, our bodies have to break down the fiber before we get the natural vitamins and minerals found in the produce.

How Do Juicers Work?

A juicer works by extracting juice from the produce you feed through the chute and separating the pulps from the natural juices in the produce your using.  The juice will flow right into one container while the pulp is pushed into another or left behind on the pulp filter.

There are 2 main juicing machines, the centrifugal and the masticating juicers.  Each of these extracts your juices differently and have good and bad advantages to them.

The positive to both juicer models is the fact that they give you nutrients immediately upon drinking your finished product compared to eating it and waiting for your digestive system to get all the nutrients into your body.

Let’s Take a Look at The 2 Different Juicer Systems

what is a juicerThe Centrifugal Juicers

The centrifugal juicer has a high speed motor that rotates quickly causing a centrifugal force.  The centrifugal force pushes your produce against a flat cutting blade right above a pulp strainer.  When your produce hits the flat blade it’s forced against the pulp strainer where your juice pushes through and the pulp is left behind.

The centrifugal juicers work quickly to get the fresh juice to your glass.  However, the fast rotation of the motor that’s needed to create the centrifugal force causes high heat which leaves your juice warm and some nutrients destroyed.

You will want to drink your juice from a centrifugal juicer quickly if you want the most nutrients from it.  The heat of the motor on these juicers will break your juice down quickly which kills nutrients if left for a period of time.

what is a juicerA centrifugal juicer works best with softer fruits and veggies such as, oranges, bananas, tomatoes, lemons, celery, cucumbers, etc..  You can use harder produce such as, ginger root, pomegranate, apples, etc., and you will get juice from them but a lot of pulp will be left behind that is moist.  When you’re left with wet pulp then you know juice didn’t make it to your glass.

Fresh leafy greens and herbs also have a bit of trouble breaking down into juice with the centrifugal juicers.  Since these are thinner and soft the centrifugal fast speed can rip them apart but leave a lot of whole pieces behind in the pulp basket and the juice isn’t extracted.

The masticating juicers use a slower method of juicing your produce which reduces the heat of the motor allowing for more of the nutrients to stay in your finished juice, along with juice separation to be minimal.

A masticating juicers, also called a slow juicer or cold pressed juicer, uses and auger that slowly grinds your produce before it’s pressed through the pulp filter.

The grinding from the auger breaks your produce down into small pieces allowing the most juice to be pressed and sent to your glass.

The slower juicing method of the masticating styles not only gives you the most juice out of your produce but also creates a lot less foam along with higher preservation time.  You can take up to 72 hours to drink juice when using a masticating juicer without much loss of nutrients.

what is a juicerUsing leafy greens, spinach, kale, parsley, wheat grass, etc., is not a problem with the masticating juicers.  They will be broken down much easier than centrifugal juicers without much waste left behind.  Your harder root veggies and fruits are also broken down easily with the slow juicers.

Masticating juicers are on the more expensive end but typically can do more than just juice.  Most masticating juicers will make fresh sorbets, smoothies, nut butters, nut milks and even pastas or grinding meats with some models.

The versatility with the slow masticating juicers are by far better than the centrifugal juicers.  Having the ability to use a juicer for more than just extracting juices is a nice feature.  Making fresh homemade peanut butter or almond milk plus fresh sorbets is a plus for those wanting a healthier life style.
